This subject offers students a broad introduction to the study of communication and integrated mass media. Topics include its definitions, principles, procedures, roles and responsibilities of communication. The subject will also examine different levels of language used in communication as well as the evolution of communication in general society.

JM 201  Law of Mass Communication
3 Credits
This subject studies the right and freedom of human in free speech. The subject will cover its philosophy, the government's regulations, offences of defamation, journalist law and other relevant law and regulations. Students will also learn about the responsibilities of mass communication, such as journalist ethics and morality.

This subject aims to provide students an introduction to speech communication, persuasive communication and basic skills in effective speech. Students are also expected to develop ability in public speaking with creativity.

This subject introduces students to journalism. Topics include its definition, boundaries and the revolution of Journalism. The subject emphasizes on newspapers, addressing on its roles, responsibilities, management, types and formats, as well as, arising issues on the ethics of journalists.

JM 211  Basic News Reporting
3 Credits
This subject provides students with an overview of the discipline and an understanding in the role theory plays in basic news reporting. It will address on its definition, disciplines, and basic skills in news reporting, and professional journalist writing, tactics for journalist interviewing and news source. Students will pay attention to practice in various style and contexts of journalist writing and develop an understanding in the logical structure and the language of news writing using computer editing software. Students will also learn how to use the new media especially the internet to enhance their journalistic practice.

JM 212  Advanced News Reporting
3 Credits
This subject aims to develop and build on the skills and sound journalism, news evaluation, emphasis on news feature stories, news sources and its techniques, advanced techniques for news reporting, such as interviewing, observation and communication skills for journalists. The subject will also cover investigative reporting, interpretative news, breaking news from overseas news agencies, current affairs debates from seminars, results from researches, etc. Students enrolled in the subject shall also gain a fair understanding in roles and the ethics of journalists.

JM 213  Photojournalism
3 Credits
This subject provides students practical skills and knowledge in photography, emphasizing on photography with a purpose. Students will learn how to operate a digital camera, a SLR camera, and process films, make a contact sheet and use an enlarger, as well as getting hand-on experience in lighting workshop as well as the use of graphic software in photojournalism jobs. This subject also emphasizes on the evaluation of journalist photographs and documentaries, photographing for a purpose, photojournalism and photographs for documentaries in newspapers, magazines and other publishing materials.

JM 230  Introduction to Broadcasting

This subject aims to introduce students to the basics of the radio and television industry and broadcast production, emphasizing on its history, nature, roles, responsibilities, and changes in digital broadcasting. Students will be also provided an opportunity to visit a radio workstation and a television workstation.

JM 231  Writing for Broadcasting

This subject aims to develop an understanding in radio and television news, covering fundamentals of radio and television news, designing and scripting broadcast media, disadvantages and advantages of radio and television news, criteria for news evaluation, the nature of news. Students are also provided with fundamentals of writing along with an emphasis upon the effective use of the audiovisual language. The writing workshops will be on script formatting, editorial writing and creative writing. The subject also focuses on news program, journalist interviewing, and presenting different categories of news, such as agricultural news, economic news, and sports news.

This subject introduces students to a fundamental knowledge in moving images. The subject will cover its nature, its role, its advantages, genres and its communication, emphasizing on screen histories. Students enrolled in the subject shall be skilled in critical thinking and analysis in a cultural context and have a good understanding of social, economic and cultural context, which have some impacts on the movement of moving images.

This subject aims to familiarize students with the natures, hypothesis and theory in communication, examining the process of human communication in a behavioral and social context, such as personal communication, interpersonal communication, small group communication, organization communication, and mass communication.

This subject provides students opportunities to experience skills in integrated creative and insightful writing in today's practice. The subject will particularly address on professional writing in newspapers and magazines and various types of journalist documentaries. The subject also covers the topics on information seeking, adopting information, and editorial writing and communication in the article and editing truth. Successful students should be able to write articles in a clear manner and an interesting way.

Successful students should develop technical skills involved in digital television production and be able to evaluate their own production.

This subject introduces students to various film theorists' theory and the fundamentals of films. The topic also covers its dimensions, its aesthetics, its boundaries and the language of the film, the stylish development of the film, the development of the character and the spectator's psychologist perspective. Successful students should be critical thinking and be able to write film criticism as well as have an understanding in, philosophy, the political idea and other issues which addressed in the film, for example, an issue on the minority group and mass communication.
